Time is money and this is a long article, so if you want a quick answer, below you will find my best bets in ranking order.

Review of the Best Adjustable Dumbbells for Home Workout: Top 3 selection

NÜOBELL From SMRTFT Adjustable Dumbbell

Nüobell Adjustable Dumbbells

The thing with adjustable dumbbells is that, there is always a compromise when it comes to function. Hence the best adjustable dumbbells are the ones that don’t lose the resemblance to a traditional dumbbell and still let you adjust weights in a fairly quick manner.

Well, NÜOBELL from SMRTFT has done it and in my opinion currently provides the best of both worlds, no wonder it’s regarded “The World’s Smartest Dumbbell”. It looks 90% like a traditional dumbbell and still, the weight changing mechanism is the fastest on the market. Just twist the handle to adjust the weight in 5 lb increments from 5 lb all the way to 80 pounds. However, a 50 lb maximum weight version is available as well. There’s a small indicator window that lets you know what weight you’re at, plus the positive and negative marks assist you in what way you should turn the handles to increase or decrease the weight. No doubt, NÜOBELL features the quickest dumbbell weight adjustment mechanism there is today.

There are 3 color options to choose from: Black, Ash White, or Tactical Green and you pay extra when you don’t choose the latter. Just kidding… but that green matte finish looks so tough, personally I can’t imagine being happy with anything less now. There’s one extra color option though, the matte black, which also adds rust-proof aluminum handles and cradles.

The Swedish-made NÜOBELL adjustable dumbbell features steel plates on both ends of the handle, but there are some hard plastic as part of the plates and in the weight adjustment mechanism as well. That said, this I find by far the only weak point that can wear off by time or break depending on the use.

One especially appealing feature is the steel, knurled handles. Some individuals may surely prefer a rubber or foam material, but as far as grip security goes, knurled steel handles are unbeatable so far. (Had it not been the case, strongmen and powerlifters would not use them for their flagship lifts.) Also, instead of an ergonomic handle, NÜOBELL adjustable dumbbells come with a straight, barbell-like handle favoring those individuals who got used to working out with barbells.

Overall, NÜOBELL Adjustable Dumbbells are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-quality, that look and function like a dumbbell. The company offers 2 year warranty. Plus for additional price, NÜOBELL offers a powder coated steel dumbbell stand compatible with both weight options. There are 3 stand variations: black and graphite finish and a heavy duty stand that’s only available in black.

PROS

  • Quickest weight selector system
  • Handles like a regular dumbbell
  • Machined steel weight plates
  • Steel knurled handle
  • Cool color options
  • Premium feel

CONS

  • Non-metal parts might break if dropped
  • Premium price

PowerBlock Elite EXP Series Dumbbells

A pair of of the PowerBlock Elite EXP Series Dumbbell
PowerBlock Dumbbell series
PowerBlock EXP, Pro Commercial and Pro series at ROGUE

One of the standout features of the PowerBlock Elite EXP dumbbell is its expandable weight range. The base version ranges from 5 – 50 pounds per hand. However, Rogue offers optional expansion kits that range from 5 – 70 and 5 – 90 pounds per hand. This means that you can continue to progress workout to workout and increase strength without investing in horribly expensive single pair dumbbells with a storage rack.

The weight adjustments on the PowerBlock Elite EXP are also impressively quick and easy. The dumbbells feature a unique magnetic polypropylene pin selection system that allows users to select their desired weight with just a simple pull of a pin locking in place with precision. The weight increments are adjustable in 2.5-pound increments up to 50 pounds, making them ideal for both beginners and advanced users.

Due to its compact size compared to other adjustable dumbbells that are usually way too long, the PowerBlock dumbbell is ideal for home gyms or small workout spaces. The square shape of the dumbbells also allows for easy storage, as they can be easily placed on a shelf or in a corner without rolling away.

Another benefit is the ergonomic design. The handle provides a secure and comfortable grip, contoured to fit the natural shape of the hand, which may help to reduce hand fatigue during longer workout sessions.

While the PowerBlock Elite EXP dumbbell set is undoubtedly a high-quality product, there are a few potential downsides to consider. Some users may find the pin selection system to be less intuitive than other types of adjustable dumbbells. Additionally, the price of the PowerBlock Elite EXP set is higher than some other adjustable dumbbell options on the market, which may be a consideration for those on a tight budget. Lastly, the one and most divisive feature of this dumbbell is its design. It doesn’t look like a traditional dumbbell, but what’s more it doesn’t feel like one either. The balance is different, but even more importantly, the shape makes it impossible or very hard – to say the least – to perform exercises when you don’t hold on to the handle but the body of the dumbbell, like the overhead triceps extension or goblet squats, since there’s no edge to grip.

Overall, the PowerBlock Elite EXP dumbbell set is an excellent investment for fitness enthusiasts who want a high-quality set of adjustable dumbbells. With their expandable weight range, quick weight adjustments, and ergonomic design, these dumbbells are sure to provide a challenging and effective workout for years to come.

PROS

  • Expandable up to 90 pounds!
  • Compact, shorter than average
  • Ergonomic handles
  • Durable, high quality

CONS

  • Look is divisive
  • Uncommon adjustment mechanism
  • Don’t feel and balance like a traditional dumbbell

You might notice there are a few other versions of the PowerBlock brand on the market. Most notably there is a PowerBlock Pro series which has a commercial grade variation, which offers 5 different sets with 32, 50, 90, 125, 175 pounds of maximum weight adjustment.

PowerBlock Pro Commercial dumbbell

All of them feature Black Urethane Coated Weight Plates. As far as the handles go, the 32, 125 and 175 versions feature Thermoplastic Rubber grip, while the 50 and 90 pound versions come with knurled steel handles. The PowerBlock Pro Commercial dumbbell also have an updated design, it is less block-like than the EXP. One downside is its price. Still, if you consider this is a premium dumbbell with more than enough weight variations even for a strongman (as far as dumbbells go), I think the PowerBlock Pro Commercial justifies its price. Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells

A pair of Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbells

Bowflex SelectTech 552 is one of the most popular and highly rated adjustable dumbbells in the market. The dumbbells can be adjusted from 5 to 52.5 pounds, 2.5-pound increments up to 25 pounds and in 5-pound increments from 25 to 52.5 pounds. This makes them ideal for a wide range of exercises.

The adjustment system is based on a dial mechanism that allows users to quickly and easily select the desired weight. The dumbbells also come with a stand that not only keeps them organized but also adds to the overall aesthetics of your workout space.

The dumbbells are constructed with a durable molding around the weight plates, which helps to protect the flooring from damage and noise. The handles are made of high-quality metal and are coated with a non-slip rubber grip that provides a comfortable and secure grip. The grip also features a contoured design that ensures a proper grip for a variety of exercises.

Benefits One of the main benefits of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell is its versatility. Due to its scalability up to 52.5 pounds, the dumbbells can be used for a wide range of exercises, from strength training to cardio workouts.

Another benefit of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell is its ease of use. The dial mechanism makes it easy to select the desired weight, and the dumbbells can be adjusted in seconds between exercises. This makes it easy to switch between exercises and maximize the efficiency of workouts.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell is also a space-saving solution for home gyms. The adjustable weight range eliminates the need for long racks for multiple sets of dumbbells, which can take up a lot of space. The compact design of the dumbbells also makes them easy to store when not in use.

Despite its many benefits, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell does have a few drawbacks. One potential issue is durability. Although the dumbbells are made of high-quality materials, some users have reported that the adjustment mechanism can wear out over time. Additionally, the rubber grip on the handle can wear out or become damaged with regular use.

Another potential drawback is its price. The dumbbells are relatively expensive compared to traditional dumbbells or other adjustable dumbbell options. Especially so considering that a dumbbell stand is not part of the package, the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbell stand can be purchased separately. Still, many users find that the overall benefits justify the higher price.

Lastly, since Bowflex have two dials per dumbbell to adjust its weight, it takes a tad bit longer to change plates, compared to the ones that have a single mechanism per bar.

Overall, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a versatile, space-saving, and easy-to-use strength training solution. Its adjustable weight range and dial mechanism make it easy to switch between exercises and increase weight over time. While it may be more expensive than other options, many users find that the benefits of the Bowflex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbell are well worth the investment.

  • You can fine tune weight increments
  • Sure grip
  • Ships assembled

CONS

  • Rubber grip wears off with time
  • Total weight might not be enough for stronger individuals
  • Not the quickest weight adjustment mechanism

All About Adjustable Dumbbells

What Are Adjustable Dumbbells?

Adjustable dumbbells are a type of weightlifting equipment that allows you to adjust the weight of the dumbbells. Unlike traditional dumbbells, which have a fixed weight, adjustable dumbbells have a dial or pin mechanism that allows you to add or remove weight plates as needed.

Benefits of Adjustable Dumbbells

  1. Space-Saving: One of the biggest benefits of adjustable dumbbells is that they take up less space than traditional dumbbells. This makes them ideal for those who have limited space at home or in the gym.
  2. Convenience: Adjustable dumbbells are very convenient. They allow you to change the weight quickly and easily, so you can switch between exercises without having to stop and change weights.
  3. Cost-effective: Adjustable dumbbells are more cost-effective than buying a full set of traditional dumbbells. With traditional dumbbells, you would need to buy each weight separately, which can get expensive.
  4. Versatility: Adjustable dumbbells are versatile and allow you to perform a wide range of exercises. You can adjust the weight to suit your fitness level and exercise needs.

What are the disadvantages of adjustable dumbbells

  1. Even though you can save money not buying dumbbell sets, adjustable dumbbells are still considered a pricey investment and depending on your level of fitness you may never use its full capacity.
  2. Compared to a rubber hex dumbbell with an adjustable dumbbell you are limited in terms of exercises selection. Think about those exercises where you use the dumbbell as a support. For example during an L-sit hold, or renegade rows. A circular shape dumbbell lacks stability and prone to slipping, buckling, a risk to wrists and elbows.
  3. In most dumbbells, quick adjustment mechanism requires compromise in terms of design. As a result even when the dumbbell is not fully loaded, and only holds a few plates you still need to lift the entire handle which is designed long enough to hold all the weights. So even when the handle holds no weight it’s long enough to be inapropriate or uncomfortable for exercises where space and clearance is an issue, like wrist or arm circles close to the body.

Types of Adjustable Dumbbells

There are two main types of adjustable dumbbells:

  1. Selectorized Dumbbells: Selectorized dumbbells have a dial or pin mechanism that allows you to select the weight you want to use. The weight plates are attached to the handle, and you can add or remove them by turning the dial or pulling the pin.
  2. Plate-Loaded Dumbbells: Plate-loaded dumbbells require you to manually add or remove weight plates. The handle is designed to hold Olympic-size plates, which you can add or remove as needed.

Factors to Consider When Buying Adjustable Dumbbells

Weight Range

Some dumbbells can be adjusted from 5 to 50 pounds, while others can be adjusted from 10 to 90 pounds. Make sure to choose a weight range that suits your fitness level and exercise needs. At first it would sound obvious that the higher the weight range the better. However, for the second thought there’s a reason adjustable dumbbells don’t excel with very high weights. It is because the weakest point of these dumbbells are the adjusting mechanism. If you need an extremely heavy dumbbell, avoid any adjustable type. Adjustable dumbbells work excellent up to mid-heavy ranges, that is, around 70-90 pounds. Anything higher and they become more of a risk than of value.

Adjustment Mechanism

Some dumbbells have a dial mechanism, while others have a pin mechanism. Both can offer great value and sturdiness. In general, people look for a dumbbell with an easy-to-use adjustment mechanism, but not at all cost. Frankly, who cares about adjustment if it falls apart within your hands or feels awkward to hold.

However, if you like to incorporate supersets in your workouts, how quickly you can change weights might be a priority. On the other hand if you like to focus on one exercise at a time quick adjustment is a feature of less importance.

Build Quality

Consider the build quality of the dumbbells. Look for a dumbbell that is made from high-quality materials and has a sturdy construction.

Steel, knurled handles have stood the test of time, in contrast try to avoid dumbbells with too many plastic parts.

Some reviewers very much like to highlight the resistance of dumbbells against dropping. While it is certainly a possibility, it is far not as common as emphasized. What they should rather point out is the risk of injury when dropping any weight whatsoever. The damage to your wallet is rather secondary. Bottom line is, don’t drop any weight, whether it’s made of plastic or metal!

Numbering

It really goes down to preference, but make sure you check out whether the weight is indicated in pounds or kilos. It can be inconvenient to convert one into the other especially once your heart rate goes up.

Also, some dumbbells only use a numbered scale to indicate the amount of weight currently on the bar and you’ll need to figure out what that number represents in pounds or kilos.

Handle length, overall bulk

Most adjustable dumbbells have an awkward, bulky look. Placing a simple rubber hex dumbbell versus a Powerblock Commercial on your shoulder will sure feel different during thrusters.

As for handle length, in an ideal world I would not do skull crushers with a PowerBlock Commcercial.

However for some exercises handle length is irrelevant like the single arm row. And for Kroc rows, no handle length is ridiculous.

Price

Adjustable dumbbells can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. As a rule of thumb the more weight you get for the same amount of money the better. Consider how many single dumbbells you can replace with a pair of adjustable piece and do the math.

Conclusion

Adjustable dumbbells are a great investment for anyone who wants to perform strength training exercises from the comfort of their home. They are versatile, convenient, and cost-effective. When choosing adjustable dumbbells, consider factors such as weight range, adjustment mechanism, build quality, and of course price.

As of today, the NÜOBELL adjustable dumbbell gets closest resembling a classic dumbbell; it feels and performs like a dumbbell, and with a turn of its handle you’ll get to enjoy the quickest dumbbell adjustment mechanism on the market. The barbell-like steel knurled handles and the premium finish with cool colors elevates NÜOBELL above its competition and I highly recommend it as a must have tool in your home gym arsenal.
